  • My husband I have attended dance lessons at Social Dance Company for almost two years. WE LOVE IT. We have learnt so many different dances, it’s so much fun and really boosts your confidence. If you have been thinking about learning or improving your skills I urge you to book in, it’s really something we look forward to each week.

    Dale and Kerry

  • Couple dance lessons that are great fun and good exercise. I recommend giving them a try.

    Thomas and Janice

  • I’M NOT A DANCER! (or so I thought). Bought some dance lessons for my wife for her birthday thinking we’ll have a couple of lessons and then I can get back to my golf. 1 year later, we’re still dancing and dare I say, BOTH loving it. I actually look forward to dancing each week and this from a guy who was happy to sit and admire others who had the nerve to get up and have a go. I must admit when we arrived for our first lesson I was skeptical. Ballroom dancing is so formal and really not something you can use in the real world. I was wrong on both counts. Firstly, they really do emphasise the “Social” aspect. The teachers are fun, down to earth and not in the least bit intimidating. As for the dancing, there are so many styles to learn with multiple styles suited to whatever music is playing. I have to also mention something that struck me after that first lesson There is something very special about the physical contact between you and your partner while you’re dancing together. It’s comforting to be walking onto the floor as a team rather gyrating aimlessly on your own. In our busy week to week lives, it’s good to have some time set aside (with no electronic devices) and spend some undivided attention with your partner. If you are the least bit curious, you should definitely give the Social Dance Company a try. It might not be for you…but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t. One of the best decisions we’ve made as a couple.

    Paul and Sharon

  • Excellent lessons in a beautiful studio.

    Steve and Kathryn

  • These peeps taught my mechanicing, motorbiking, footballing, cricketing blokeybloke to danceydance. Not only taught him to dance, but made him feel welcome, talked to him about cars and and sports to distract him, and actually had him enjoying it… he now dances twice a week and goes to lessons ‘on his own’ if I’m travelling. THIS is where you need to come to start, pickup or further your dance journey. It’s fun. It’s friendly. It’s family.

    Trevor and Cate

  • We can absolutely recommend the Social Dance Company for any couple looking to give dancing a go. Matthew, Dani and the team create a fantastic environment for those beginning their dancing journey, those well down the dancing path and everybody in between. It’s fabulous fun !

    Kathleen and Beth

  • We’ve been married for 20 years and my husband never danced with me – he said he’s finally give it a go, 3 years later we put on an amazing performance for our 25 years wedding renewal and he loves it every week when we go – he ‘brags’ to the family how many dances we learn. We love it – kids are no longer dependent and this is something ‘we’ do together and know one else.

    Rick & Nikki

  • Never would I have thought that would be a time where I would look forward to dancing. And that is all credit to the amazing instructors at SDC.

  • Jackson Browns song, for a dancer says: ‘I just do the steps that you’ve been shown by everyone you’ve ever known. Until these steps become your very own.’  My SDC family has made me into the person I am today. I couldn’t have done it without being a part of this awesome family. Thanks to all my SDC mentors for teaching me, not only the steps of dance but also leading me to take the steps into my new life. A life of euphoric glee.

    Johnny Manolelis

  • What an awesome place. The studio welcomed us about 6 years ago when I was looking for something musical that we could join as well as the benefit of being social and keeping us healthy. We have made so many dance friends – we love it! The studio is our happy place, full of music, fun and of course the best thing is the dancing and the amazing staff.

  • Matthew Aker

    Studio Owner and Senior Instructor

Matthew is the driving force behind the studio and a true visionary when it comes to dancing. His 18-year International career has seen him shine a spotlight on couples teaching, pioneer new ways of learning and create a unique studio that is all about the fun and excitement of social dancing.  He’s not your traditional dancer who fell in love with dancing; he fell in love with what dancing can do for people.

Matthew is all about the individual and how dancing can affect different parts of your life from learning new skills, building fitness or spending more time with your partner, overcoming loneliness or finding some “me” time. The new studio in Dural is the culmination of Matthews experience as a teacher, mentor and business owner and brings together a new and innovative approach to learning to dance.

  • Dani Bliss

    Studio Manager and Senior Instructor

Dani has had a love affair with dancing since she was 9 years old and her father gave in to her pestering for lessons. At just 17 she became a qualified instructor and joined SDC studios in 2010. As a senior instructor, she specialises in working with couples and solo men. Her love affair isn’t just for the dancing but more for the teaching, she enjoys seeing students, who initially thought they had “two left feet” grow in both confidence and skills. She is an amazing teacher who has a passion for working with couples and has taught some of our couples for almost 8 years.

Dani is an expert at developing foolproof teaching methods to get students up and dancing socially in no time at all. As a studio owner, she loves working with the team and creating a great environment, but the real the thrill is seeing how dancing can have a major impact on a student’s life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too old to start learning to dance?

You are never too old to learn dancing! Whether you’re 20 or over 45, you can absolutely learn to dance at your own pace. This form of movement is incredibly enriching, fun, and a great way to exercise.

We encourage you to start wherever you are. Our classes are open to all ages, skill levels, and genders. If you’re feeling a bit intimidated, don’t worry! We have extremely talented dance instructors who are here to guide you through every step with patience and care.

Do I need a dance partner to take part in same-sex dancing classes?

Our same-sex dance classes are private, one-on-one sessions, so bringing a partner is key. Same-sex dancing classes can help you grow and experience a new form of expression and appreciation alongside your partner or friend.

Is there a specific dress code for dance classes?

Dancing requires movement and flow, and while there’s no strict dress code, we recommend wearing comfortable, breathable clothing that allows you to move freely.

When it comes to footwear, always opt for comfort over fashion. Remember, you’re going to be dancing! We recommend wearing flat, supportive shoes that allow you to feel the floor beneath you and maintain your balance.

If you’re feeling up to it, you can always explore new dance shoes and get into the groove, although it’s not necessary!

Feel free to contact us at your convenience if you’re still unsure, and we’ll advise you accordingly.

My partner is a little shy. Do you offer private dance lessons for same-sex couples?

Of course! Dancing, especially if it’s your first time, can make you feel very self-conscious. But don’t worry – if you or your partner feels more confident starting in a personalised setting, our private dance lessons help you find your rhythm in a safe and more intimate space.

I have no ‘rhythm’ and a reputation for being a little clumsy; can I still learn to dance?

Absolutely! Anyone can learn to dance. Like any skill, it takes desire, perseverance, and patience to develop, and thankfully, there are classes for it!

Joining our private same-sex dancing classes means you get personalised attention and encouragement, helping you to eliminate any self-consciousness or doubt that is bubbling in your mind.

We truly believe that everyone has the potential to dance; it just takes the right guidance, someone to show you the ropes, and trust us when we say, your confidence will skyrocket.

What are the most common / best dances for same-sex couples to learn together?

Some of the most versatile styles for couples to learn together may include swing, salsa, and waltz, as they all offer a good balance of fun and creative expression with your loved one.
